Sugar | Kelli Chambers
“Sugar’s owners initially contacted me for help when they learned that little Sugar had a congenital condition called Mega Esophagus. Most pups who are born with this condition are either culled by the breeder or waste away because the condition is so severe the pups can’t get the nutrients they need to thrive. With this condition the esophagus is enlarged, and paralyzed. Because of this, when a dog eats, the food or water sits in the esophagus, and cannot make it’s way to the stomach because the esophagus doesn’t work. This causes the dog to reguritate anything that has been ingested. In the past, this condition was a 100% death sentence for the dog. Sugar was regurgitating 10 plus times a day, and couldn’t keep any food down no matter what the owners tried. So, they called to surrender her to me after a few months of trying the things I had recommended for her, and not being able to maintain.
The day she arrived Sugar weight a mere 21 pounds at 5 months of age. She was severely emaciated, and her growth stunted from this condition. I was not confident that she would survive, especially if we couldn’t get her to keep food down. So, I built her a “Bailey’s Chair” that has been the saving grace for ME dogs all over the world. By eating and drinking in the chair, and maintaining an upright position afterwards gravity can take the food to their stomach since their esophagus cannot do it for them.
Initially we tried different foods, and consistencies since ME dogs need to eat soft or wet food, and only had minimal luck with regurge episodes. Finally, I decided to try the canned Zignature. My working K9, and other shepherd have been on the Zignature Duck formula for years, but it didn’t dawn on me to try the cans on little Sugar. After looking at the different percentages on the different protein sources I was thrilled to see such a high quality content on the Turkey formula. I started her on the cans, and BAM!! She was like a whole new dog! She started gaining weight, her regurge episodes all but stopped, and you would never know anything was wrong with her unless you saw her eating from her chair!
Zingnature has been a literal LIFE SAVER for little Sugar. 3 different vets recommended she be euthanized due to her condition, but the current vet is constantly amazed at her progress. I can safely say that without Zignature’s wonderful food that Sugar wouldn’t be with us today, and wouldn’t be ready to find her forever home! Because of this, I recommend Zignature to other owners and fosters of ME dogs, and my client’s dogs as well. So far, those who have switched have said they will never feed another brand of dog food.”
